We do the Shenandoah sometime three or four times a year. Our best campground is LOFT MTN. It is very seldom FULL UP... Big Meadows is probably the most popular site. It is the first one to fill up for sure especially on the Holiday weeks like the 4th of July - WBWOOD is going to find this out pretty quick haha...
About the only place we visit connected with Big Meadows is the open picnic grounds just West of campground. Also the Way Station at Big Meadows is great... Big Meadows is also well known for it hugh showing of Deer population in the late afternoon just before the sun goes. Folks are lined up on the main SKYLINE DRIVE Road overlooking the big green meadows to the East as far as you can see everynight...
Both Big Meadows and Loft Mtn have associated WAY STATIONa on Skyline Drive with snack bar, shopping, and gasoline...
Big Meadows also has a SKYCAM camera setup available 24/7 looking to the East out over the Big Green Meadows from the WAY STATION... I like to watch the snow level building up during the winter months...
BIG MEADOWS WEBCAM
Not sure about Big Meadows CampGround but CELL PHONE service is almost non-existent at LOFT MTN. The only place we could use our cell phones was sitting up on the rocks on the West side of the camp ground. TV service is outstanding pointing your OTA antenna is many directions finding HDTV signals. I counted over a 100 channels one night just looking around to see what was out there that was usable. Of course most of it was the same National Broadcast channels but coming from different towns. Just the WX and LOCAL NEwS would be different...
We usually make a run down to Harrisonburg VA one day during or stay on Skyline Drive...
WBWOOD would really feel right at home doing the Virginia-West Virginia State Line Forest Service roads behind Harrisonburg VA. Lots of scattered camping spots up there mostly around a place called FLAGPOLE RIDGE. These are the only dispersed camping grounds close to us where we can hide out for a couple of weeks from the general public. Probably looks more like NC up there haha...
