Silverton Colorado area

We are going to spend two weeks after the Fourth of July in and around the Silverton Colorado area. We could use some help on free camping spots. We don't need anything fancy and we have a 25 foot Northwood Nash travel trailer & pulling it with a three-quarter ton four-wheel-drive diesel. I see some free camping in the national forest service but how available is that in July? And can you recommend where we can camp 2 or 3 nights or even a week in one place. Be able to leave the travel trailer and go sightseeing for the day. It's just the wife and I both healthy enough to do hiking and biking dry camping.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Also if you have suggestions of what to see and do we would be thankful.

  • I spent a week in the area last summer. No expert.

Tiger, we did the Alpine Loop and when coming back down from Cinnamon Pass towards Silverton, we saw a large area that looked similar to your photo of Kendall. Is Kendall about halfway between Silverton and the ghost town of Animas Forks? If so, it looked like a GREAT place! We plan to stay there next time we're in the area.

Lot's of off roading you can do in your truck. Ouray has a neat 4th of July festival with parade. Can't think of a much cooler spot to watch fireworks! Durango Silverton Train is great. I recommend one way and then the bus back. It's a long day both ways.
  • Kendall camp area, July 2012. 14 day limit, free at that time. Check San Juan NF for updates.

  • Check out Mineral Creek campground in Silverton no hook ups but a beautiful campground right along the creek.
