Skyline Dr / Shenandoah

We are considering a trip to Skyline Dr. / Shenandoah this July.

It looks like it's a relatively large area. Is there any benefit to being in any particular area. For example: KOA has 2 parks in (1) Madison and the other in Harrisonburg.

Anybody have any suggestions which area is best to stay in? Is there anything other than the state park in the area (we have diverse group going)?

I welcome any thoughts on these or other campgrounds in the area. I looked at Loft Mountain (which was recommended by others), but I really want full hook ups.

Thanks for whatever comments you have!
  • Big Meadows is beautiful too. Wonderful hiking; amazing views; doe and fawn plentiful at this time of year; no hookups but very clean bathhouses and showers available; close to a lodge where delicious food is served. If you need full hookups in that area, check out the KOA in Luray on rvparkreviews.

Best place I've found on the Shenandoah was Loft Mountain Campground near the southern end of the park. Nice wide open, LARGE camp sites, some with nice views. I just never enjoyed camping in town :)

X2 On Loft Mountain. One of the best I've been to
  • We love Loft Mountain. Stayed there in August. The temperature never got above 75, Even though the temps in Charlottesville reached the mid 90's. True, there are no hookups but the sites are all paved and water is close by. They also have a well equipped store at the entrance. Generator usage is allowed for certain hours, during the day.

This is one of my favorites. Wish it weren't so far away from us.

  • We went to Skyline Dr. / Shenandoah last year and had a blast. Skyline Dr. is absolutely beautiful. We also went in July, and the only downside was it hit 100 degrees every day. We stayed at the Jellystone (we wanted full hookups) in Luray and went to Luray Caverns as well. It was part of a week+ tour, where we started in Gettysburg, visited Luray/Shenandoah, Monticello, and on to Williamsburg. I'm not sure how much time I would have spent at Luray beyond the couple of days we spent there. Have fun!
