We are by no means experts at being snowbirds yet since I just retired in 2014. First winter we traveled the southern route as far as Tucson. We saw a lot along the way (FL panhandle, San Antonio, TX Hill Country, some of NM, Benson/Tombstone) and stayed one month in Tucson. Enjoyed it.
Second winter we went to FL (Bradenton/Sarasota area) and did not enjoy the traffic jams and crowds. Left and spent a month in Myrtle Beach, SC and loved it.
This winter we will head to TX Gulf coast, spending 24 days on the gulf at Port Aransas, then head to San Antonio, up to Austin (get some good TX BBQ), then up to Waco. Not sure where we will head after that.
We don't enjoying sitting in any single spot for too long and prefer to explore different places. TX seems to have a lot to offer.
