I'm trying to figure out what "crush". We are in Mesa for the winter. 20 minutes and we are out in the Superstitions. Lots of hiking areas/geocaching is great. Now, we never get out in traffic during rush hour, so maybe that is the 'crush' you are talking about? Everything in the valley is laid out on a grid - really couldn't be easier to get around, at least on the east side.
