Snowbirds Question

We will be travelling for the first time from Canada to the USA this January. As winter will be in full swing by the time we leave, our fifth wheel will have been winterized. What do fellow Canadian snowbirds recommend we do when heading south - take to a dealer to 'summerize' before leaving or what process do others use to prepare for the journey? We are worried about something freezing along the way until we get to a warmer climate. Thank you for your assistance with this.

  • Don't understand the problem?
    De-Winterize?

After I fill the system with antefreeze I drain it, job done. No need to keep the pipes full all the water has been displaced. Drain the antefreeze then dump it down all the drains, now all the P traps are full.... Walk away, job done.
When heading south don't hook up the water till it's warm.
We carry a few large jugs of water to do dishes and flush the toilet.
Don't worry, nothing will freeze after day two.
  • Be aware that most CG's in the North and Midwest close around October 1st. Do a search for along your route to see if any are open without hookups so you have a place to stay for the night.

Coming from the north during winter months I leave the MH winterized. I bought a porta-pottie and set it in the bathroom next to the MH toilet if needed. ( I refuse to use public bathrooms at gas stations!) And I Carry a couple of jugs of water on board for washing hands etc.

Although most northern CG's completely close around October I found that CG's along the side of the interstates will still be open but without water hookup. I stay in these overnight and use their bathroom facilities and shower.

When I hit the southern states where there are full hook ups I de-winterize at the CG by simply running water thru all the lines until all the ant-freeze is gone.
  • We do the same as Stickdog, but have never taken it to dealer for dewinterization. We do it a campground when we are far enough south to not have to worry about freezing again.

  • Do not summerize before you leave. For example, between Christmas and New Years Day it can be -30C at night in places like Jackpot NV. It is not until you get to Las Vegas or South that you can relax.
  • The normal recommendation is to go straight south till you are in warm temps then de-winterize. Some use RV antifreeze for flushing the commode and carry a few gallons of bottled water for drinking and washing, warming on the stove as needed if overnighting in the RV others just stay in a motel and not bother with the rv till in warm weather.
