Socorro NM RV parks

Thinking about a couple day layover in Socorro on the way south. RVparkreviews.com only shows two RV parks and the ratings didn't sound too good. Went to the socorronm.org and it lists 7 in the area. Anybody have real world experience with Socorro area campgrounds?
  • I would go a few more miles and stay at the elephant butte RV ( park or resort) in truth or consequence, nm. Did not answer your question but elephant butte is very nice.
  • Depends in part on what you're planning to do in that area. Near Socorro -- besides the old stuff directly in town -- are the VLA and Bosque del Apache NWR, among other things. Bosque will be very, very busy soon with the annual festival of the cranes, drawing thousands of visitors (and about a gazillion sandhill cranes, snow geese, and other migrants). The VLA is always fun anyway.

I won't bother with the county park. Casey's Socorro RV Park and Bosque Birdwatchers are the two that most visitors to the area stay at. Casey's is in town; Bosque Birdwatchers is actually in San Antonio just outside of the NWR boundaries. Both are pretty basic, especially Bosque Birdwatchers, but you're not there to enjoy the beauty of the park, but to enjoy the area. Check the dates on the festival, though, because you may be completely out of luck in the area, given the popularity of the festival.

  • I have been to Caseys. Inexpensive gravel RV park with pull thru full hookups. Would stay there again.
  • Elephant Butte State Park is very nice has many places some with full hookups. It is at Elephant Butte exit before one gets to T or C. There is another state park several miles south of TorC as well. Caballo Lake State Park.

Yep! the Bosque del Apache NWR is a neat place to see. Never stayed at Birdwatchers, but would if going up there with the trailer.

Another neat place, but off I-25 to the east from San Antonio, NM is Valley of Fires BLM Rec. Area & campground. The CG is very nice many with water & electric. Reviews-Valley_of_Fires_Recreation_Area-Carrizozo_New_Mexico.html

One can make it to Carrizozo & by pass ABQ as well as Santa Fe by take US 84 just passed Las Vegas which will take you to I-40, after cross the 40 the road turns to NM 219 which will quickly take you to US 54, turn right (south) & it will take you to Carrizozo. Take US 380 left (West) to get to Valley of Fires. US 380 will take you to I-25 at San Antonio as well. Or go back to US 54 to Alamogordo & take US 70 to Las Cruces to I-25 as well as I-10.

We are leaning towards Bosque Birdwatchers because of the Wildlife refuge. We'll be after the Crane festival. Wanted to go to Box Canyon and the Very Large Array. For other posters, we thought we would day trip T or C, because we are going to take US60 west into AZ rather than diving south on I25.
  • Drive the 50 miles to Elephant Butte or another 15 miles to Caballo State park both parks are very nice. The Restraints are very good and there are 2 veterans clubs with in 5 miles from the Elephant butte park .
