southeast campgrounds

My wife and I are recent retirees and are making a camping trip this summer. Our 5th is parked in Myrtle beach. Any ideas for great campground destinations within 4 to 6 hours in any direction from there? we are looking for clean comfortable campgrounds with lots to do whether it be near water or mountains. Thanks LH
  • This is in Florida in the Ocala area. It's about 8 hours from you but is beautiful area. FLA-Gypsy told me about it. Salt Springs recreation area. Looks like lots to do, even though it is a little further than you wanted to travel.

    Another place that looks interesting.

I haven't been either place but I was looking for a few days
inland before meeting DS and DGD in Panama City in June.
  • If you want to camp as close as Charleston, Oak Plantation CG is nice, and convenient to James Island as well as downtown. Haven't seen the KOA, which is on the other side of town (north, also near the shore) but have heard good things about it.

We stayed at the KOA south of Savannah for several days. Not super, but clean & friendly, and there are tons of things to do from there, including the downtown (lots of history - plenty of old homes to tour), historic Fort Pulaski, more beaches, etc. We even took a day trip from there to St Mary, where there's a little but wonderful submarine service museum in town.

I would avoid Savannah Oaks rv park. We stayed there with a rally last June and it's not very nice and far out with no cellphone signal, except for Verizon. Sandy, snakes, etc.
  • Asheville NC. Asheville East KOA in Swannanoa NC.
Then I would move to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville TN area. Cherokee NC is also a neat place if you've never been.
  • Here are a few we have enjoyed, in several States, none of which will disappoint:

  • Savannah: Skidaway Island State Park. River cruise, Mrs. Wilks Restaurant, carriage rides, Tybee Island visit.

Cherokee, NC - Ashville area: Holly Cove (quiet) campground, access to entire Smoky Mountain National Park. Also Creekwood Farm RV park near Waynesville, NC. Drive over the mountains to Sevierville, TN and the Apple Barn Restaurant.

Agree completely with the first response re: Florida.

Double ditto. If you want to escape the humidity and oppressive heat in FL, S GA, and SC I too recommend the mountains.

GA also has some nice mountain campgrounds in addition to NC. Unicoi State Park just out side of Helen has some FHU sites. Plenty of private cgs too. Do a Woodalls.com search around the following GA mountain towns:
    Blairsville
    Clayton
    Mountain City
    Cleveland
    Helen
    Dahlonega
    Hiawassee

You can also find some nice cgs around Franklin, NC that don't have that parking lot/sardine feel of tiny sites.
