southwest itinerary

We have the first half of our western trip planned ending with Yosemite the middle of September. We have tried to include some of the national monuments and smaller parks that we missed on our first trip several years ago, I need help in planning a route after Yosemite. We would like to go to Hoover Dam and then on to some Indian ruins in Arizona and New Mexico. I have read about and seen pictures of some very interesting places. What is the best way to see several of these in some sort of organized way? I know we can't possibly see them all, but would like to see as many as possible. We have been to the Utah parks and Mesa Verde. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks, Barbara
  • I would suggest staying at Dead Horse Ranch State Park.Water and electric hookups. You can see the ruins of Tuzigoot from there about a mile away. You are also within site of Jerome,an old mining town with lots of history and about 20 miles from Ft Verde an old Army post.If you get up in the northeast corner is Canyon de Chelly and the Hubbel Trading Post. Both are very interesting.Cottonwood Campground is ok but no hookups.
  • Near Flagstaff, there's Wupatki and Walnut Canyon NM's. Nearby Sunset Crater is an interesting drive combined with Wupatki. Walnut Canyon does require climbing quite a few steps if that is an issue.

Back up in Utah is Hovenweep NM. While there are parts of Hovenweep that extend into CO, the Square Tower complex in UT is especially nice.

Of course there's Chaco Culture and Canyon de Chelly in NM and AZ respectively. Make sure you read the NPS website about roads into Chaco to make sure you go the right way.

Back in CO, I know you said you've been to Mesa Verde, but did you get to Anasazi Heritage Center north of Cortez near McPhee Reservoir? Definitely worth a stop. They can direct you to other, lesser know sites in the area. Ask about the Sand Canyon trail if you can do several miles of hiking.
  • There are a good number of them in Arizona.
Some of them were already listed by dbbls.

We do like both Tuzigoot and Montezuma's Castle (also Montezuma's Well, thought not listed on the Map that I will link.

Any questions, feel free to PM me.

Also, if you're in that area, Jerome is a great place to spend a few hours roaming around.

  • There are three ruins near Camp Verde north of Phoenix. In Phoenix is Pueblo Grande near the east end of the airport. South of Phoenix is a one of a kind ruins at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. East of Phoenix at Globe is a city owned ruins that has partially been rebuilt. These are all ruins of a culture that existed in the valley from about the time of Christ until the mid 1400's. Most of these ruins are different in the type of architecture that was used. The largest, a four story structure made of an adobe like material, is at Coolidge, AZ, at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.
