Space 11
Our most recent trip was into California's White Mountains east of Bishop. We'd not been in this area so we decided to use the USFS Grandview campground (Inyo National Forest)as base to explore for more locations.
To start with, California highway 168 east of Big Pine to the Nevada state line isn't for the faint of heart. It's steep, winding, and one lane for about 1/8 mile...

To access the campground, you must go about 5 miles up White Mountain Road which is steeper and narrower than CA 168, but has a good asphalt surface. The campground is set up as a loop with an extension. There are 26 spaces with a few well separated from the rest... space 11 being the best in our opinion for privacy.
Space 11 isn't very level, and I spent quite a bit of time getting leveled as I had to dig holes on the uphill side plus use my leveling blocks on the downhill side. Still, it was worth the trouble as no close neighbors! Firepit and picnic table, with pit toilets scattered around the campground. No charge for camping but they request a donation... no envelopes at the iron ranger as seems usual anymore to us.
The site is arranged like a pull-thru...

This campground is very heavily used by stargazers. I saw some of the largest portable telescopes I've ever seen in use while we were there. The area is home to an ancient Bristlecone Pine forest, and the views of the Sierra crest are fabulous. It's an easy drive to Mammoth Lakes if you like tourist towns, and there is stuff close to see too...

Space 11 doesn't have a spectacular view, but it does look out of the trees into an open sage meadow, and walking about 50 feet gives a nice view of the Sierras.
You can get real remote just down the road if you want...
