Spontaneous AZ & Utah Trip

The family was planning a trip from FL to AZ, Utah, Yellowstone and points close by for next May. The problem was getting enough time off from work to make it happen. Low and behold I lost my job 2 weeks ago and we decided that now is a good time, job wise, to make the trip. Being planners, we are not happy that getting site into the national parks is going to be almost impossible. Also the summer heat is a negative, but we have the time, well about 24-26 days or so before commitments start stacking up at home. So, we left home last Monday night and headed west. No reservations other than staying at my wife's boss' house for a few nights in Flagstaff. Also, first time using generators that we bought 4 years ago to dry camp. In the past our overnight Walmart trips were in cool weather. I'll try to post some as we go. Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce are must stops. We want to control the distances and see other side ventures while hitting some big parks. I'll try to post some as we go along, time and internet access permitting.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. Thought I'd update since we have a good internet connection.

The first night we drove to the Live Oak Walmart to knock out a couple hundred miles. Must have rained earlier that day because it was cool enough for no air and we skipped the A/C. There was one other RV and about 4 trucks in the parking lot. Upon leaving the next morning, we saw the no RV signs, opps.

The next night we burned up almost 600 miles and made it to a small campground that looked good on RV clicky about 40 miles west of Jackson, MS. I forget the name, it was only 3 miles off the exit, but out in the boonies. Billed as a small fishing resort on 15 acres of lake and an old civil war battle site. Mostly permanent residents, actually we appeared to be the only temps.
  • Funny, I responded to your wife on FortFiends.net with some ideas. I hope they help!
  • I am a planner too, but it sounds like you left home without much time to plan.

Try US 191 from the Bryce-Capitol Reef-Arches-Canyonlands NPs to Grand Teton and Yellowstone NPs. You avoid all the Salt Lake City I-15 traffic and the higher elevations of the Unitas and Flaming Gorge are gorgeous, as well as cooler. You can also stop at the Utah Field Museum in Vernal for a couple of hours, especially if you don't have time to spend a day going out to Dinosaur National Monument (although the dinosaur quarry there is spectacular too!). We stayed at the Firefighter's Memorial Forest Service Campground near the top of the Uintas and would definitely recommend it. No hookups there, just water, flush toilets, and a dump, so you may need your generator.

A wonderful campground to try to get into at Grand Teton NP is Colter Bay on Jackson Lake. They have both FHU sites and no hookup sites--not cheap, but well worth it for the views. When you leave Yellowstone, try to go out through Cody and spend a day at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. It's worth every penny!

If you do get into Colorado on your way home, take a look at my new blog for some inexpensive camping ideas and not-to-be-missed scenic attractions along the major US highways in the Colorado Rockies. The blog can be found HERE.

    Have a great trip!
  • Plenty of higher elevations where it is cooler. North rim GC, Cedar Breaks and Panguitch area, also Bryce. You could spend some time in the CO Rockies on your way home, too. Make lemonade! ;)

That's what we did two years ago. We stayed at Bauer's Canyon Ranch RV Park in Glendale which I thought was one of the nicer places.
    Enjoy!

  • FYI, not sure how tall your rig is but the tunnel from the East exit of Zion is kind of scary for the taller RVs. I mention this because you may be tempted to use it to head out to Bryce Canyon instead of going the long way around. You can however pay the rangers at the tunnel entrance to block traffic coming the other way so you can travel down the center of the tunnel where there is more headroom.
Have great trip and safe travels.
  • Getting a new job would come first for me and I'd never have asked my boss to camp at his/her home but I'm just an older guy. Hope you have a terrific time.
