I have an idea of a trip before kids go back to school. We are 4.5 hours away and the goal is to catch some amazing top of mountain views. Question is .... Worth it? Are there any campgrounds nearby ...

Probably the best "top of mountain views" on the east coast is the skyline drive in Shenandoah National Park. Very informative visitors centers, good wildlife viewing, and great campgrounds w/o hook ups along the drive, too.
