st. George island florida state park

Any information about the park, what are the better sites for a 37 foot 5th wheel, how far the beach, stores for food . Thank you
  • Watch out for the Diamondback Rattlesnakes. We went last August and the place was crawling in them. One was after our Pomeranian. The Rangers get made if you kill them!! Loved the place until last year, probably been there at least 10 times. Do not know if I can get my wife to go back. Also watch out for the yellow flies. Other than that I love it there.
  • Sites 43 & 44 are very large. I think 44 has a bit more shade. It's a fairly long walk to the beach. There is parking close to the beach. 2 small convenient stores on the Island with limited selection. Across the bridge into Apalachicola there's an IGA. The raccoons are determined little pests so be careful with trash. If you're in pretty good shape the long, long walk along the beach toward the point with Dog Island (I think) is an amazing hike for the shells and just the Robinson Crusoe feeling of being abandoned on a deserted isle. Some locals and folks in the know drive thru the interior of the island to reach the point due to the great fishing but the "road" is just loose sand and brush and requires 4WD and experience. If you like something different hike behind the CG into the interior toward the bay and look for Osprey nest and learn about the turpentine.
There was 0 cell phone service when we were there 4 yrs ago. If you enjoy being connected to the world be prepared for isolation.

  • We were there a few years ago in August. Loved the State Park, the beach is long and few people. It would be a bit of a walk from the campground. You can park near the beach. Other people camping said that if you walked the beach along the East side of the island you could find shells. You cannot drive the road is gated. I reserved one of the sites with the low numbers. There was a lot of vegetation and hidden puddles breeding mosquitoes. Maybe the higher numbered sites with the dunes behind the sites wouldn't have so many mosquitoes. Less chance of puddles. Don't think "Oh the mosquitoes can't be that bad." They are so be prepared. We would go back and I recommend camping at the park. Apalachicola is a nice town with grocery stores and shops, etc. It is 12 miles away.

  • Take plenty of bug spray. Mosquitoes are horrendous. But I like it here.
