Starter Park in RGV

Have been going to Arizona for a number of years. Being from Iowa the drive is getting to be boring and long so we want to try the valley. Need the names of some starter parks for a week and look around for maybe a three month site. Be leaving Iowa right after Thanksgiving and slowly get to the valley. Thanks in advance.
  • Give VIP LAFERIA a look on the internet and in person. Know several who had plans of looking around and never left the park for the season.

Also the drive down is enjoyable if you take highway 77 south from Waco.
    Avoids the major city(s) traffic.
  • The Rockport area is very nice but be aware that it is a few degrees cooler and quite a bit windier. Good fishing and close to the beach though. For me most suitable for March and April.
  • Having spent last winter inland in Mission, I would highly recommend the Rockport area near South Padre Island. The whole road from Mission east to Harlingen (and beyond) feels like one long dry dusty strip mall. We are more "beach and fishing" people and Rockport would have been the better choice for us. You get better restaurants and seafood and entertainment on the coast.
  • Most RV Parks in the RGV are located betweeb Mission and San Benito. If you are going to spend your time looking at RV Parks for the long haul, then I suggest a mid valley location. If you pick a location at either end of the valley a round trip to the other end and back will be 100 miles.

The cities of Donna, Weslaco and Mercedes are mid valley. Victoria Palms is located right off the Expressway which is the main east west road in the RGV. It is on the Donna/Weslaco border. Another Good choice wood be Llano Grande in Mercedes. Both are high end RV Parks.

A point to note. Some of the roads in the valley are being renummbered. Expressway 83 is now Interstate 2 and US 281 and US 77 are being renumbered as Interstate 69C and Interstate 69E. I-69 will have three branches in south Texas. The main one goes to Laredo, the Cental one to Pharr and the Eastern one to Harlingen.
  • There are about 500 parks in the valley.
    So many choices.
Depends if you want to be near South Padre island or further west.
In the Mission area I suggest Bentsen Grove or Americana, Green Gate Grove, or Vals Country Coral. Mid Valley Casa D Valle in Alamo is nice or Victoria Palms in Donna. There are many other good choices but there are many bad ones too. Don't trust the web sites totally.
