State or Federal Camping near Festus,Mo

We plan to visit our kids and grand kids who live near Festus,Mo next spring. We prefer state or federal campgrounds.Would like electric hookups.Would not neccesarily have to be in Missouri.Illinois or Kentucky could work.Would like to be less than 50 miles of Festus.Thanks.
  • We have lived in Festus for 50 yrs and would suggest St. Francios State park. Electric only sites but plenty of water fillup places and a Dump station. When we use this park which is 3 or 4 times a year and get there on Sunday afternoon and never make reservations. They have about 20 first come sites. As Oakman said it is about 25 mi south of Festus. 4 lane all the way. Once you are on a nonreservable site it is yours for up to 15 days. Send private message if you have any Questions. There are 2 other State Park choices in the area. Washington and Hawn.
  • Johnson's Shut-ins State Park is a little further south but is a very nice state park and new campground.(make reservation) Elephant Rock SP is about 30 min. north of the campground. You could spend a few hours walking the trails and climbing on the gigantic rocks. I'm not sure if Lesterville has a grocery store, maybe just a convenience store. You can also do a float trip on the Black River. There is also Taum Salk Mountain SP (hiking) nearby. It is fairly remote and may not have good cell signal. Beautiful area!

  • There's not much around Festus, MO. You best bet is St. Francis State Park. It's about 24 miles straight down hwy 67 from the park to Festus. Because the park is very close to St. Louis it is very popular, especially on weekends. It would be best to make reservations online.
