Well there is Acadia NP in Maine. That park is scattered around the landscape and not in one solid unit. Be sure to visit the northern parts on the coast. If you like history then there is Concord and Lexington NP outside Boston and Boston itself has a lot of historical sites that you can mostly see in a one day walk around the downtown area. The NPS runs walking tours with a period dressed tour guide. It can be very hot in summer.
Just driving around the New England towns and backroads is interesting. The same applies to Maine's coastal villages. New York has a huge Adirondack park and their Finger lakes region is worth a visit when you get to Niagara.
