Virginia and Maryland, both have some great state parks that will fit into the "beautiful, scenic and nice" categories. In Virginia, you have Natural Tunnel SP, Grayson Highlands SP, Kiptopeke SP on the Eastern Shores. In Maryland, we love Point Lookout SP.
These are not in the NE, but you have to go through here to get there, so you might as well have some great places to see on your way to and from.
