Well, we cashed in Hilton points to stay two nights on Times Square but I've checked the Times Square box for good. We stayed two nights at a Courtyard Residence Inn on Herald Square for around $200 which is good for Manhattan. There are actually reasonable rates on VRBO if you are staying 7 days.
We also found Manhattan reasonably affordable for a frugal family of four. We ate granola bars, etc. for breakfast most days but breakfast sandwiches on the street are reasonable. We also ate falafals and shawarmas from street vendors, checking for cleanliness first. $5/person or less. Bottled water is readily available for $1/bottle from vendors. Pizza by slice is reasonable. Used trail mix to supplement, etc. We ate sat down meals at mom and pops for dinner as well using Yelp. Ate our way across China Town and Little Italy.
Great thing was other than going to a Broadway play, most of our site-seeing was free. Walked Central Park one end to the other, free concerts in Bryant Park, Walked around financial district, 911 memorial. Statue of Liberty costs money and if you go to top of Empire State Building or Top of the Rock, that's a chunk of change but it's worth doing one. We bought a subway card with X # of trips (20?). Mostly planned our walking routes but used subway for big hops such as to Financial District, China Town, or north end of Central Park.
Have fun! And research TKTS for last minute deals on Broadway but it's hard to get tickets for the family next to each other. We bought tickets to Les Mis in advance because that was a nonnegotiable for our trip.
