Sunset campground in Bryce - ease of walk-up reservation?

Has anyone ever done the walk-up process at Sunset? They do not take advance reservations for sites there. We are thinking of going in June. Does the office open at a certain time? Is there a mad rush at a certain time or a slow trickle?

If we arrived early or mid-week would we have a better chance of securing a spot vs. arriving on say a Friday when all spots might already be taken?

Have never done the walk up process before anywhere so some tips are appreciated. I don't want to go there and find that we can't get a spot.

Also does anyone have any experience with Ruby's Inn RV park?
  • Hi all. turns out I was able to get a spot at Ruby's with full hookups. We will have a 5 month old grandbaby with us, so the full hookups will be welcomed. And swimming pool and jaccuzzi for the older kids.

We will try for one of the dry camping spots when it is just the two of us.

    Thanks,

  • I will say that Red Canyon is typically quite a bit warmer than the CG's in Bryce. It's lower in elevation with fewer, smaller trees. Just pay attention to the temps to decide where to stay.

That red canyon campground looks cool. Quieter alternative. First come first serve again I see.

Could actually work out, leave on a Friday, take our time getting there, arrive on Sunday morning to try to snag a spot.

  • We're planning on camping in Bryce again this year in June. I've got us scheduled to arrive on a Sunday for maximum opportunity to snag a great spot. Get there Sunday through Thursday morning by 10 or 11 and you'll almost always find a spot from our experiences.

  • Stayed at Ruby's Inn campground. We made reservations for a pull thru the day before. Loved the campsite, campground and the folks running the place were great. Don't know if you are a senior but, if so, be sure to get the Senior Park Pass--saved us a ton of $$'s for multiple visits there and at Zion. Lars

Ruby's Inn RV park is just outside the gate. You can catch a shuttle to the park.
We like the park when we can't get a site in side the Park.
  • The recommended way to get a spot in one of these no-reservation CG is to arrive in the morning, say at 8 or 9 AM and watch for people checking out if there are no open sites when you get there. Monday thru Thursday will give you the best chance, Sunday will catch the weekenders checking out. Friday and Saturday are the worst.
