Takes its or foolishness?

Anyone on this forum pulled their travel trailer on to Oceano Dunes? Lots do but I haven’t been one of them. And lots get stuck. Never had a buddy present to rescue me. With the truck or Tahoe, no problem.

I was just at Oceano beach last week.  Sand looked pretty packed down and safe to drive on.  BUT!! The last time I was there it wasn't as firm right off the ramp and crazy me drove my then Ford diesel pick-up (no trailer) and immediately got stuck.  Not the first time I got stuck and I have always been lucky and someone would pull me out.  I now carry a tow strap and have pulled 2 people out of the sand and 1 out of a snow bank.

Thank you for the reply. I will take the 4x4 truck onto the sand almost anytime but scared with the travel trailer. Been carrying a strap too. This was a good, packed day

  • As far as I know the Oceano Dunes were closed on April 14th to off road use and camping due to a judge ruling to protect an endangered bird.  May be reopened but don't see anything that says it's been over-ruled.

We were there April 15 and it was open.  Mostly 4wd pickups driving on the beach.  Don't know about camping but I would not take my 25' trailer on the sand.  Update:  my wife just corrected me and said she heard the same report as you about the ramp being closed soon.

  • My first driving on Oceano Dunes was with a ‘70 Corvette in ‘71 coming home from some Army training and, of course, a girl. Very lucky…didn’t get stuck. We stayed friends and she always brought up that beach trip.

  • If you’ve been on that beach many times, you probably know what you can and can’t get away with.
    Just don’t be me….

Almost lost a Hilux rental in Australia last fall. Never seen mud just under sand on a beach….until that day.
A lot of quick thinking and scrambling to get it jacked up and extreme luck that ONE rig came down the beach about 20min before the tide hit the tires was the only thing that kept me from having to purchase a Toyota that I’d never see again!!

Probably no issue most days getting from the ranger station to the wet sand but parking far enough from high tide requires pulling to dry sand. That and crossing the creek are the scary parts for me.
