Taxes

Hi, My wife and I are planning to spend the winters in Florida in our class C starting next winter. We were wondering how do others deal with getting your income taxes done, do you just make sure your home by April 15?
  • We get home by the end of March, by that time of year it starts to get rather warm in Florida and I it doesn't make sense to me to set inside with the AC running.

Thanks for the responses. Can you obtain your w-2 via email?. I'm retired from NY State and receive my w-2 in the mail. Tim
My retirement board has my 1099 (not a W2) online.

Obviously you need to check the NY website.
  • AARP will do income taxes free. Just find a local office. The only problem may be with your home State taxes that the Florida tax preparers may not be able to handle. We do Illinois state income taxes online free once the Federal return is prepared.
You can easily get an extension to file BUT if you owe money you have to pay by April 15 or pay a penalty.
This may be one reason why many/most Snowbirders pack up April 1 and head home.

Whether you use a PC or online program or do them by hand or hire a CPA, you can do your taxes while in Fla the same way you'd do them at home. You just need to collect all the forms & data and go through the process. I'm at a different location each year and have no issues preparing my taxes, just takes an extra week for my mail to catch up with me. Most of the tax data is available electronically these days. Most folks use either online or TurboTax like software to fill out the forms. Most folks file electronically; no trip to the post office required. It doesn't matter if you're in Fla, Az, Tx or Ca.

If you have a good mail forwarding arrangement/service, a PC and tax software, you can do your taxes wherever you happen to be. As it happens, we have somebody to prepare ours and it's all done by mail and web. If you have Municipal and State taxes, then it'll take a little more planning, but I have no doubt you can do it all remotely.
