Teddy Roosevelt N.P.

Heading to TRNP has anyone stayed by the south unit, in or near Medora N.D.? Any recommendations?
Has anyone towed from there to Glacier? Any good routes?
  • We did both North and South units on our way to and from Glacier liked both. Stayed at Medora Campground. OK but not great - it was convenient. Try to stay off the intersate going to Glacier, much prettier and more interesting staying on state roads. Great auto museum in Chester MT. Good RV park in Shelby part of Comfort Inn. Interesting musuems etc in the little towns along the way. Took our time and enjoyed.
  • We were there for three nites last week and as jk said Jim is super guy. Park is quite and clean. We saw buffalo, wild horses and of course the prairie dogs

I guess they completed the work on the entrance roadway then?

No construction on the entrance road. But the scenic loop IS closed as noted on their website. You can go most of the way around, but have to turn around.
  • We stayed at the Medora Campground, just outside the south entrance in Medora. It's OK, a little tight on the spacing. We were only there for a couple of nights, visiting TRNP on the way to Glacier. We only visited the South Unit, but thought it was beautiful. Got to see the wild horses. The Painted Canyon section was very nice at sunset.

To get to Glacier, we actually chose to stay on the interstate (94/90). Overnighted in Bozeman and then went on up through Missoula and the east side of Flathead Lake on 35 to Highway 2 over to West Glacier. Some might consider that the long way around, but our drivers just felt better staying on the interstate.
  • For previous posts search this Forum for Medora in the RV Parks section. The municipal CG has a pool!

  • We stayed at the south campground, Cottonwood, about 10 days ago. No hookups, but a really nice park. The campground host, Jim, is really on the ball, ready to help if needed. Many decent sites. I never saw a National Park that had empty sites before. Next time we'll stay more than 2 nights.

  • Have stayed at both the North and South units often while visiting family in the area. Prefer the North, less crowded. No hook ups, cell service, or TV unless you have sat dish. There are water and dump stations, not always open. Gets hot in summer and early fall. North unit has Bison, longhorn cattle (last herd around), big horn sheep, pronghorn, deer, coyote, turkeys, etc. South has wild horses and lots of prairie dog villages also.
  • The Medora Musical was very entertaining, and they also serve dinner before as an option. Are you up for deep fried steak cooked on a pitch fork?
  • We did last year, there is a good CG inside the south unit. The one we stayed at was a fair way off tho and I saw some around Medora. We also ran up to the North Unit and it was moderately interesting. I'd have to rate both as third class National Parks. Worth a look but no spectacular features. The south unit can have Bison but we saw none on that last trip.

There is a clear route to Glacier, get on US 2 and stay on it to Browning, which is a few miles outside the park. Switch to US 89 for the last couple miles.
