Was at a Cocktail Party last night and everyone said it differently - BUT we all Knew where it was and what town we were talking about.

Bottom line - everyone knows it and we all LOVE it! No matter how you pronounce it.

Silverton has two good rv parks. It is high altitude, and compared with Durango, you will love the lower temperatures. After that, you can head over to Ouray, which also has a few rv parks.

The hot springs pool there is great (shh! don't tell anyone I'm from Glenwood Spirngs!). Stunning views right from the pool. Last time we were there, we watched a black bear forage on the hillside across the street from the pool.

Don't know the capabilities of your 4x4, but a drive into Yankee Boy Basin should certainly be on your agenda. If it's a dually, you won't get as far, but the flowers are still worth the drive.

Take a day trip to Silverton. Very touristy but authentic wild west town. Busy in the middle of the day when the trains are in town, but quiet once they leave in the afternoon.

Telluride is beautiful too, but quite upscale anymore. Just drive on through town to the head of the valley for some amazing views.

As noted, Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP is another easy day trip from Ouray.

We stayed at Alpen Rose just north of Durango a few years ago and liked it, just FYI.

If you can get in, Mueller SP near Colorado Springs is awesome as is Mountaindale RV park. You could always look at Ridgway SP north of Ouray. Great campground as well and just a few miles to Silverton & Ouray.

Echoing a lot of what has already been said but if in the area, Durango, Ouray, Silverton and Telluride are all areas you should visit. Durango will be the warmest since it is at the lower elevation and it is more of a larger town than the others but has it's own unique character.

Mesa Verde National Park, a good day trip, is another location one should see when in the area but know that it will be warm there and is not really part of the mountains. It is roughly a 1 hour drive from Durango.

I stayed in 4J campground last summer. It is very conveniently located, walking distance to most of the town, and the hot springs pool. It was perfectly decent RV park-but the section I was in was tight with little spacing. My site backed to the stream.

As far as the campgrounds go, just based on campground itself, I like the KOA better. But I like the location of 4J better and I'd stay there again.

Ouray is nice, but we much prefer Durango.
