- 2oldmanExplorer IIMany go to the RGV.
- DesertHawkExplorerTX isn't noted for many boondocking sites. Perhaps some dispersed sites in National Forests (mostly East Texas north of Houston - maybe a little cold?), Big Bend Nat PK & Nat Rec Areas as well as Padre Island Nat Seashore. Boca Chica Beach might work in RGV.
Some small towns have free or near free campgrounds.
TX state parks are priced similar to CO. TX State Parks
TX Park Passes
Very little BLM land in TX, most is private land.
RV Camping in TX
RGV RV parks are many & come with a variety of prices. Do an internet search.
The RGV - An OverView
A Little Of This, A Little of That in Texas.
Here's a hodge podge of older post, maybe something will be of help:
Near Amarillo: Never been to the state park either, but have read about it & would like to make it over there someday. Palo Duro Canyon State Park as well as Caprock Canyons State Park, from what I have read, seem like very neat areas to see.
Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway would make a neat place to check out. One I would like to see. For perhaps a neat experience, Copper Breaks State Park near Quanah sounds pretty cool.
What I have on the Abilene area. We found really good steaks at Buffalo Gap Steakhouse in Buffalo Gap, of course.
As well as Joe Allen's in Abilene.
This one might be good as well? Lytle Land & Cattle Co.
Never been to the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, might be good. The area around Buffalo Gap is really neat. A state park there as well. Abilene State Park
There's a Buck Creek and Abilene RV in Abilene.
Abilene KOA is located in a former pecan grove near the intersection of I-20 and highways 277/83/84.
Near Pecos & Midland/Odessa on I-20. Not stopped but seemed kind of neat, Monahans Sandhills State Park.
What I have on the :)Big Bend Area. We really enjoyed Balmorhea State Park & checking out Fort Davis Nat'l Historic Site. And the new Boquillas Port of Entry.
Near Del Rio The Amistad Nat'l Rec' Area.
US 90 Route from Van Horn to San Antonio Sections of I-10 between San Antonio & Van Horn, Speed Limit is 80 mph, it can seem like a raceway.
In Texas on I-10 west of San Antonio, I have never stopped here, but have been tempted to do so, Caverns of Sonora, they say is a National Natural Landmark, a unique cave located 8 miles west of the town of Sonora, Texas, and a world-class cave. It does have camping as well.

Sonora is East of Ozona. Seems I remember a Rest Area before getting into Sonora, up on a hill, with great view of the countryside. Might be the same one mentioned above by TexasShadow. Should be a good place to overnight. Rest Area 394mm
South Llano River State Park adjoins Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area, south of Junction was a nice place. S. Llano River SP.
The Museum of Western Art near Kerrville is really good, a must see for sure if possible.
http://museumofwesternart.com/ Should be easy to find RV sites as well. Used to be a state park by the river, but not a state park now.
I found Cascade Caverns at Boerne to be extremely neat (my first cave) when I was about 12 or 13. Not sure how it would hold up now for me. Ha! Cascade Caverns
I see they do have camping there now.
Seems many of the small towns in West Texas have city RV parks, such as: Littlefield city park near Lubbock. Likewise, near Clovis, NM, Muleshoe city park. Other Such Parks
We spend an overnight at a Walmart Supercenter - 702 West Loop 289, Lubbock 806-793-9686. There are more as well: Walmarts.
TX Free or Almost Free Campground...............Ditto Free or Nearly Free Campsites.
Find Dump Stations.............Ditto.
If eligible Military FamCamps offer great prices.
Likewise, COE Campgrounds offer great prices, but only on is located South of Austin. Many North & East of there.
For True Boondocking Snowbirding One would have more Success in Arizona or New Mexico & I the State Parks are more reasonable. Especially in NM.
Here's some info on the Las Cruces Area & Southern NM Mexican Food plus camping and attractions in the area. At least try a Green Chile Cheese Burger. Video
Taste of NM Pecans: Stahmanns or Salopek
Off I-10/I-25 on US 70 between Las Cruces & Alamogordo, White Sands Nat'l Monument & Alamogordo Area.
West of Las Cruces on I-10, In Deming there are Hidden Valley Ranch and Low Hi Ranch RV Park plus a few more: RV Park Reviews. 81 Palms (55 RV Park) is just off I-10 on the frontage road, west side of town.
Pancho Villa SP is south of Deming right on the Mexican Border. North of Deming towards Silver City is City of Rocks State Park. I've never been to Pancho Villa, but have enjoyed out trips & stays at City of Rocks.
Silver City Area -Videos
New Mexico State Parks Best Camping Prices Around & No Day Fees on top of camping fees. NM Camping Fees
In Las Cruces: Hacienda RV Resort and Siesta RV Park are the easiest to get to, just of I-10 exit 140. Las Cruces KOA and Sunny Acres RV Park off I-10 exit 135. KOA on the mesa over looking the Mesilla Valley, Sunny Acres in the Valley.
In AZ: The Chiricahua National Monument by Wilcox is a neat place. The Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum, just west of Tucson is really great (a zoo mainly without bars mostly) is over on the west side of Tucson by the Saguaro Nat'l Park and Old Tucson (the movie set/theme park). The Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum is a must see for sure. Tucson Mountain Park and Gilbert Ray Campground in near by. I drove into the campground last spring, it wouldn't be a bad place to spend some time. I believe it is first come/first served which I prefer. Kartchner Caverns State Park from what I have read should also be a neat place, we have not gone yet.
My Daughter & family live in Tucson, which has proven to be a neat city, easy to get around in, with many things to see and do around it. Never camped there, however. But visit often. Maybe something in this will help out: :) Clicky.
Good Luck with your Quest. - Pop-Pop_CExplorerThere are some parks in the R.G.V for $3-400.00 plus elec. range .
Usually small and crowded. Can't hardly get your awning out
and the stickers are free!!!! - TomG2ExplorerFor starters, RGV means Rio Grande Valley, which is not really a Valley, but that is another story. Basically, it is the southernmost part of Texas near the Mexican border. I have stayed in parks with full hookups but few amenities for as low as $135/month. Most are double that or more. It rained this summer, so the mosquitoes and little black bugs are bad. The usual windy conditions have not started to blow them away yet. For those, like me, who are coming down early, bring your bug spray.
- GemstoneExplorerDesertHawk.....WOW!....and I thought I gave out a lot of information....nice job!
Regards
Gemstone - MichDocExplorerNicest area is Mustang Island and Padre Island. Both allow boondocking right on the beach.
- pawattExplorerThere are nearly 500 RV Parks in the Rio Grande Valley, Prices start below $200.00 per Mo plus Electric. One nice low end park is Golden Grove Near Mission. Good free WIFI, Good size sites and near Bentsen State Park & the World Birding Center.
Also paved bike trails nearby, No Pool & few activities but several adjoining parks have many activities open to the public. The Rio Grande Valley will be the warmest area of Texas, We have not had a frost for the past 2 years. - TomG2Explorer

Mustang is North Padre just south of Aransas Pass & north of North Padre. It is nice & not a busy area but colder & windier than South Padre. - 2112Explorer IIStay away from the pan handle area in the winter. It gets dang right cold and snowy up there.
Brrrrr....
