The Alamo & parking

Might be the wrong place to post this, but here it goes.

DW & I are planning to see the Alamo this Oct. Hope to stay at Ft. Sam Military Campground, get up early, see the Alamo, the River Walk, and have a good lunch then head for the Corpus Christi area and then onto New Orleans area and then up 55 to home. Question is: Is Ft Sam a good place for the night and then where to park a B to tour the River Walk and the Alamo and have lunch. Spending most of the day. Is safety a concern. I know price is to me. Really need help with this.

thanks
  • Be wary of the parking garages' height restrictions.

Did one of those couple of years ago. Put the money in the slot numbered for your space.

Sometime later on, got a mail delivery and a ticket for not paying.
    RIPOFF!!

    Use a check.

Yes, I used the right slot.

Interesting. Ours had a "booth" that took credit cards and dispensed receipt for the dashboard. If my memory serves, it was a parking lot for a hotel that also invited non guests to use, and was about 3 blocks away.

About 1 1/2 blocks east of the Alamo there is the River Center parking garage with several stories. pay parking
or, across the street from it, there is a large open parking lot (pay parking)
From Ft. Sam, you can go West to N. Alamo Street, then stay on it all the way downtown. You'll pass the Alamo on your left. Turn left on Crockett and go east until you see the parking lots. Not far. You might get lucky and find a parking place right on the street..if you're lucky. Parking is as safe there as anywhere else. Plenty of good eating places in the River Center, just go inside the Mall.

Sorry, I get my rights and lefts turned around sometimes, lol

I also usually park at the Rivercenter Mall parking lot. It is near Alamo Plaza, and you can catch the river barge for your Riverwalk tour from the lower level of the mall. I recommend the river barge tour before going sightseeing on foot along the Riverwalk.

My choice to eat on the Riverwalk is County Line Barbeque, which is a local restaurant.
  • We visited on a weekend, just one block down and one block over ( left) we found on the street parking with a meter. 4 hours cost us $1 in quarters. and did not need all that time.
  • Just a block or two down the street from Alamo is Menger Hotel. Here is where Teddy Roosevelt signed up his "roughriders". Go in, the bar is just as it was back then. This is an awesome place to see. Try it, I think you will like it...

The bar also has ax marks from Carrie Nation's temperance gals. A walk through the Menger lobby while on Alamo Plaza is a real treat.
  • Is the Bar in the Menger Hotel? And does it serve lunch. DW wants the food, me the beer. So we compromise. Let's do both. This sounds like a gotta see. I mean what could be better, all our interest in one place, history, food and beer (but not necessarily in that order).
    thanks a bunch y'all. Can't wait!
  • I have stayed at the Menger a couple times, its a great place but you can do better eating elsewhere.
  • When we were there two years ago I had contacted the city parking authority, which gave me an address of a lot near the Alamo where RV's could park. Great! So off we go.....only to find a big sign "No RV's, buses or trucks" at the gate. So much for that idea. We looked across the street and saw an RV in a lot, so we pulled in there, only to find a sign that announced that RV parking was $60 a day! No thank you. As we pulled out of that lot, we noticed diagonally across the street two other RV's in a small lot, so we headed over there. Ah, success at last - only $15 per day. For cars the rate was $10, and since the LD takes up two spaces, I had no problem with the $15 charge. In case anyone is interested, the coordinates of the lot are 29.424845, -98.482491. This was one of those where you put your money in the slot numbered for your parking spot - we had no problems.

    Have fun!
