This isn't exactly the Milky Way -- the stars are mostly in the area of Orion, since it is mid-winter. And this isn't exactly a shot taken from our campsite, since Upper Pines Campground in Yosemite has a lot of trees. But it was taken while we were camping, so it counts, right?
Anyway, this was taken from the Tunnel View area overlooking Yosemite Valley -- it had snowed a couple of days earlier, and it had been very cold since then, so there was still plenty of snow. When I took this shot, it was about 20 degrees, and the Tunnel View platform was coated in an inch of glare ice -- not the greatest place to plant a tripod. This was a 20 second exposure at an ISO of 1600 -- it is best viewed on a big monitor in a darkened room, if possible. (To get the full experience, you should also drop ice cubes down your shirt.)
I will be interested to see how this shot looks online, especially when the new "expand" button is clicked. I have used the new rv.net photo posting app (thanks again, 1492!!) a few times before, but this is the first time that I have uploaded a full size file (1.4 MB). Up till now, I have always downsized the files in Picasa to make them load faster, which unfortunately degrades the image somewhat. If you find that this loads too slowly, please let me know and I will continue to use smaller files.
