Jim, I had never heard of Freestone -- I looked it up, and you are well-positioned to get into some really dark skies -- just four hours from Tahoe! I think you will really like "boondocking" in some sort of RV in remote locations and taking photos of the stars -- it is really great to have a comfortable place to sleep, to get in out of the cold, to have a hot drink, etc.
Have you decided what kind of RV will suit your needs? Are you transporting a big telescope? Or several? Maybe start a new thread here? You'll get a lot of helpful feedback from some experienced boondockers and photographers.
