I know of one couple that come south in a truck, spend the winter, buy a slide in camper down south, use that truck/camper as they travel lazily north in the spring, sell the camper, and it mostly pays for their whole winter(the portion above normal daily living.) They do this each winter.
For the record, they are not government, teacher, misc... retirees. They do have paid health care coverage from their country of origin.
As Water-bug said it's all about priorities. Everything else is just an excuse.
