I've been following this topic since the OP first posted. Lots of thoughtful observations. Just picked up my copy of AARP magazine which is usually find shallow and for the most part useless.
However, in this issue on page 47 a story titled "You Call this Retirement? As the idea of the American retiree evolves, don't expect to see so many boomers on the golf course. This generation still has work to do." The story fits in with many of the observations made here.
I have noticed that the RVer populating is certainly aging. Although we're probably on younger side of the curve (64 and 61), we are not seeing as many "youngsters" starting to RV fulltime/part time/snowbird.
Most people I know spent too much money on their kid's college, didn't save a thing for retirement, taking care of aging parents, are raising grandkids, got screwed in the market, lost their traditional pensions, lost equity in their homes, etc. etc. There just isn't money for an RV or time to use it since they are still working.
