You should have been there in the 80's....
We went to Q every year for over 20 years. Sometimes just for the day and other times for several days and even sold at the Main Event for two years (those were 21 day stays).
In the 80's it was great very little theft was heard of. In the 90's you began hearing of generators, tools, bicycles and other stuff being stolen. By the start of the 2000's theft was daily along with pick pockets and con artists.
We never lost anything, but I did witness a con artist team at work one year. They were able to bilk $1000 from a guy by using a 3 card monty type scam. The sheriff indicated that every year these teams of thieves are brought in from other areas to steal from unsuspecting visitors. Due to the size of the area and the amount of people, it's tough for the law enforcement to crack down on these teams.
That being said it is a once in a lifetime visit. Anything you want or need can be purchased at one of the numerous selling areas scattered around town.
Camping outside of town in one of the BLM areas is great, not crowded and true desert camping. Just be careful with your stuff.
