The base is gone it now has Market Commons, the Pavilion is gone but parts are still there at Broadway at the Beach..... speaking of Broadway at the Beach if you have never been to Ripley's Aquarium it is nice but pricey....... I have been told the Marsh walk at Murel's Inlet is nice didn't have time this time we were down there...... Shopping at the two Tanger outlets or Bass Pro Shop but I agree I can't take too much shopping.....

Charleston to the Battery (Nice ghost walk tour at night), a cruise to Fort Sumpter or a tour or the aircraft carrier Yorktown or the sub make a great day trip.

We just spent Labor Day weekend at a CG about 25 miles North/Northwest of MB. They are also a wine vineyard and offer wine tastings and an interesting selection of wines. The owners are great people.If you enjoy wine, this is worth a 30 minute drive from MB. Here's their website:

tatest - not sure when you lived here, but the shopping is much improved. It has been many years since the Sears Catalog store was the main shopping option.

In addition to what others mentioned - day trips to Wilmington and Charleston. A day trip to Georgetown is a good option - especially during their annual river festival. Hampton Plantation is near by.

My family is from Whiteville, not real sure what there is to see there or in Lumberton. Calabash is interesting to watch the fishing boats come in and get some real Calabash style seafood, not the stuff the have along restaurant row. Ella's and Coleman's are two of the original restaurants.

In addition we now have quite a few bike trails and in Huntington Beach state park there are some walking trails and observation points.

Parasailing and deep sea fishing are other options. You can rent surf boards to try out our small but adequate waves.

One other stop not mentioned is Market Commons, next to the airport. While there stop in Toffinos for real Italian pastries. There was a compny doing Segway tours, not sure if they are still there.

Dolly's new production - Pirates of the Caribbean opened last year and should be something different for those who saw her previous show. If you are a golfer and don't want to do a full 18 - we have several executive par 3's. Nascar park is a lot of fun with their go carts of all sizes. Across the water way check out Myrtle Beach speedway - they sometimes have the opportunity to ride or drive a Nascar race car. View the whole thing from the air with a helicopter tour. If you have children Ripleys in all of its incarnations is fun and we have a new addition - Wonderworks.

I lived there almost two years, seldom went to the beach, and there was no shopping (unless you wanted to visit the Sears catalog store). Shows? The drive-in movie, the theater on base, and sometimes something at the Pavilion in season.

So what did we do if we didn't go to the beach? Weekends I wasn't on duty roster, we drove to Florence, Charlotte, or Wilmington for shopping, Charleston and Wilmington as tourists, and visited the historic small towns in the northeastern counties of S. Carolina, southeastern counties of N. Carolina. Places like Lumberton, Whiteville, Mullins, Marion, Kingstree, Andrews, Georgetown, Dillon, Conway. Each had their own attractions, I'd find them when out running cases, but wouldn't have time to visit while working.

If you don't care for local history, there is always golf. I have relatives that would go to MB (or the Sea Islands alternate years) for a week at a time and do nothing except golf. MB has developed into one of our biggest golf tourism areas.

So much to do at MB. From charter fishing, to scenic boat tours, parasailing, helicopter rides, Shagging / dancing, Amusement parks, mini golf. Alligator Adventure.
And as mentioned Wilmington, and Charleston. It all depends on where you are staying as to which is a longer drive. From MB proper, It is 1 hour 30 min to Wilmington, and 2 hours to Charleston. But that's not the whole story. Southport is between MB, and Wilmington, and of course the WORLD famous Britt donuts are at Carolina beach.

There is history all around you. From Fort Fisher, and the Orton Plantation, and Brunswick Town near Southport, Not to mention Historic / Wilmington itself, To Charleston, with Boone Hall Plantation, The Battery, Patriots Point, and well there is just too much to mention.
You are right in the middle of more to do than you have time for.

BTW. You can drive on the beach at Fort Fisher IF you have 4x4. Also on the North End of that island.

You like Hiking. Hike up the beach to the state park, or to town. Or to the pier at Garden City. No reason at all to be bored at MB.

Agree totally with Jim1632. We stay there (HBSP) a good bit. Never travel north of Murrells Inlet. Did all that as a teenager. Ride bikes, walk the beach, eat good seafood, pull out the Nook and read a good adventure novel. I've gotten really good at doing nothing.

Plenty of Historical sites and sounds south towards Charleston.

We spent several days exploring the Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach SP south of Myrtle Beach. Gardens have both art and historical aspects to view. The SP has the old house that was built in the 1920s by the couple who donated the SP and Garden lands - very interesting place.

A reasonable drive to Charleston to see the aircraft carrier and submarine were enjoyable. A longer drive to Wilmington to see the USS North Carolina is good as well.
