Thunder Storms

Pretty amazing thunder and lightning now!

Be sure you're not setup in a wash or dry creek bed. Get into your car/truck (and drive to the closest Walmart). :B

I don't think there is any difference between open country or an established RV resort. Severe weather affects everyone, and those of us in RVs are a bit more vulnerable than those in stick-and-brick buildings. No matter WHERE you are, if severe weather is coming ... get-out-of-Dodge! If you can take the RV with you, then do. If not, leave it behind. It's ONLY replaceable property. Your life is not!

In the Mid-West, there are tornadoes. On the East coast, there are hurricanes. On the West coast there is the threat of drought and forest fire (and earthquakes). In the Northern boarders of the USA, the threat of severe snow and avalanches. In all cases ... if possible, get out of harms way. If it's completely impossible, then all you can do is honker down, face the RV into the direction of the wind for the strongest resistance, and find a hole to crawl into.

We often run into lightning storms while hiking in the mountains. Here is what the experts recommend: don't stand near a tree. Get rid of your aluminum hiking poles. If you feel electricity (hair standing on end), squat down and try to balance on a minimum of shoe contact with the earth. (I have doubts about that -- if a huge lightning bolt is heading your way, will it be deterred by minimizing the grounding of the circuit??)

After having been struck by lightning at a tournament Lee Trevino was being ingterviewed the following year at that same event. When asked what he would do if thunderstorms threatened agsin Lee said he would take out his one iron and hold it up over his head.

That's crazy replied the interviewer...

Trevino just smiled and mused "Nah, even God can't hit a one iron."

I was hiking at 12,500 feet on an open snowy ridge above my house in Colorado with my dog, when clouds quickly came in and then thunder, lightning, and a bit of hail. My ice axe began to vibrate. I probably should have left it behind, but instead we quickly slid back to the tree line below.
