I have spent a week, or three in the Hills, most summers since 1994. I can't recall anybody ever dismissing Crazy Horse as a "complete waste of time". Given that there are almost two thousand reviews on tripAdvisor, and it gets a four star rating, with over seven hundred calling it "excellent", I'm not alone in strongly recommending a few hours there. I would hope the OP wouldn't pass up on a truly incredible stop in the stunningly beautiful Black Hills.
