I understand some states, like Oregon, offer discounts to veterans, resident or not - a good thing for us.
We just came back from an RV camping trip in Oregon ... no non-resident discounts at all for us in their state parks ... except for Disabled Veterans. No regular Veteran (of which I am) or Senior (of which I am) discounts at all.
Even though the Oregon State Parks we camped in where excellent and FHU, I don't need excellent and don't usually need FHU ... just the lowest cost possible combined with the non-crowed quietness and Mother Nature's natural beauty that can only come with the vast acreage and "lesser facilities" of our Federal Public Lands.
Let's keep our current Federal public lands Federal.
I thought they allowed a discount to all veterans? Not sure. But, yes you're correct about DAV's (which I am), Oregon gives ten days free camping PER Month to Disabled Veterans.
I believe everyone in the country is a member of "Some Group" (AARP or AAA) comes to mind) and always looking for discounts for the members. Problem with that, soon enough everyone gets a discount and the park goes belly up.
I'd feel a whole lot better traveling to other states (which we do a lot) and just get ONE fee for everyone ... resident, non-residents.
But to charge a fee to non-residents is like kicking a gift in the rear-end. Not only do we pay park fees, we buy fuel, food, drinks, and revenue for the local attractions -- it's not like we don't pay our way. It's a bigger contribution to the local economy than just the park fees.
Maybe a DAV discount is appropriate (defending our country) is a bit more that a member of a group. Maybe seniors because our taxes been paying to develop parks and forests all our lives.
A healthy, full-employed citizen has less a need for a discounts just because he/she joins a 'group'. Monkey's 2 cents.
And absolutely ;; Keep Federal lands federal, otherwise, we will all lose access.
