Trip report: Southern Utah

bryce is wonderful.
The first time we went to Utah we stayed in motels for two weeks. Since them we have returned many times and see more in a smaller area each time.
Now we spend three months in the winter there.

Thanks for the temps. About what I was guessing by how you guys were dressed. Have thought about going down there this time of year but spring always seems to work out better for us.

We have a oil filled radiant heater that, other than the occasional "click" of the thermostat and some creaking as it heats up, is silent. Comfortable, even heat. Nice to in that it doesn't get too hot to touch (i.e.; dog doesn't melt when she brush's up against it). However, it does take up some floor space.

Mockturtle, that may be our solution -- I had been resisting the Olympian heaters because of concerns about ventilation and carbon monoxide -- why leave a window open when you want to conserve heat? But we discovered in Utah that we have to leave more room for ventilation than we thought -- we left the vent hood open over our stove (which is an opening about three inches by 12) -- and although we had plenty of oxygen, we had a lot of vapor condensation, which turned to ice on the windows. This despite thick foam insulation on the inside of the windows.

So since we have to provide a lot of vapor ventilation anyway, why not go with a propane catalytic heater? I might also invest in a digital carbon monoxide meter, just to be on the safe side.

RE: catalytic heaters...we've used one for 16 years of full-timing and they are wonderful - constant warmth without sound. Highly recommended. For your small trailer get the smallest one you can find. They really put out the heat.

I have a 24' C; the Wave 3 does a pretty good job of taking the chill off in a rig of this size or smaller.

Told my friend who moved to Ogden in the 90's that I think Utah is the best state for all around outdoor activity not to mention a place where I would want to live, he turned to his 15 year old son and said "see".
