Tucson area

We are wanting to head to Tuscon in Jan . We have friends who are heading to Havasu area and have mentioned numerous times that the drive there quad everywhere , (get groceries, on the streets etc) Are you able to drive your quad like this in the Tuscon area or are you confined to certain areas? Any nice quadding around Tuscon ?
  • If your quad is licensed, registered and insured, you are allowed to drive it on public roads (including dirt) in Arizona. If not, you will likely receive a traffic citation if you try to do so.
  • Tucson Jim forgot several minor things. It MUST be registered in either AZ OR a state that AZ has a signed reciprocity agreement with. If NOT one of those 2, you will receive a citation. Also, it must have certain safety equipment and the one that every officer will check for is license plate light.
  • I do not know the answer to your question. We visit Tucson often (our daughter lives there) & have never seen an ATV driving the streets.

Tucson population is a large city. Lake Havasu City isn't. I would not want to drive an ATV in some of the traffic in Tucson. Although it is easy to get around in Tucson.

Tucson is the 32nd largest city in the U.S.

Tucson's mid-2010 population was 520,116 and the unofficial estimate for 2015 is 589,656. Pima County's 2015, population estimate is 1,132,440.

Total area of Tucson is 227 miles
    Elevation is 2,643 ft.

Lake Havasu City had a population of 52,844 (2013).

Tucson is surrounded by five mountain ranges; the Tucson, Santa Catalina, Rincon, Santa Rita, and Tortolita mountain ranges

Tucson is bordered by Catalina State Park, Coronado National Forest, Saguaro National Park East and Saguaro National Park West, and the Tohono O'odham Nation

Tucson is the sunniest city in the United States.

It is a large city but is spread out so much, it never feels like a large city. Very easy to get around the town.

  • Your question has been answered about the law. Tucson is a big, busy city. Riding an ATV on the streets would be a death wish. Guess you would be ok with a big quad like a Wildcat. You would have to do some real homework to find a campground with nearby shopping.

An edit here... Wife and I remember seeing quads in Apache Junction on some of the main roads. So, I guess you could do it. I just wouldn't in Tucson.
  • Thanks for the info. We don't have to plate our quad in our home province so that alone might be an issue to bring it there. We would be staying at Desert Trails rv park so was hoping we could go right from the park to the trails without having to load it up on the deck of our HDT
  • Go to the Arizonian RV http://www.arizonianresort.com/ and you can ride right out to the back of the park. Miles and miles of jeep and off road trails. Warmer than Tucson in January as it is about 1000' lower. You will find lots of others to ride with at this resort.

Not really.... Catalina SP is a huge beautiful CG that has hook ups and some of the best hiking in the area as it sits at the foot of Mt Lemon. My only objection to Catalina SP is that they do not allow wood fires of any kind. Directly across the street from the entrance is large shopping center; Walmart, theaters, Best Buy, Dicks, restaurants(Olive Garden, The Keg - great steakhouse, even an In and Out). Just down the road is Home Depot, Chile's Target, Fry's... just about any store you would ever need is within a mile or two.

I would not recommend trying to drive a quad on the streets of Tucson, as noted it is a large busy city but from Catalina SP you can easily walk or bike to the shopping center. Downtown Tucson is about 12 miles to the south and there is limited public transportation available.

  • Check what the RV Park is like on Google Maps Desert Trails RV Park, South San Joaquin Road, Tucson, AZ. It seems to have was of driving out of the park into the desert & trails there without getting onto the highway. It seems to live up to its name.

As for shopping, I didn't look very carefully, more than likely not. It is located on the extreme western edge of Tucson proper.
  • We have been to Tucson many times and have seen ATV's on the city streets, like Speedway. Not my thing, but ......
