Tucson for Snowbirds?

We finally rolled into Tucson last night for the first time and plan on being here a few weeks.

It sure would help us out to know what your favorite things to do, see, and eat are here!

TIA!!!

  • Here's a few favorites of ours:

Down south of Tucson in Green Valley is the Titan Missile Museum which should bring back some memories of those days back when all we had to do was worry about the Russians.

Then for maybe a day trip or perhaps when heading on out of town, off to the southeast of Tucson roughly 100 miles are:

The Fort Huachuca Museum which shows a lot of the history of that Post starting back in the late 1800s in the days of the Buffalo Soldiers. This is still a very active Army Base and probably very interesting for anybody never having spend time on a Military Post.

Down the road from there is the Coronado National Memorial which commemorates the Coronado Expedition of 1540- 1542. They ranged all the way up into the Panhandle of Texas and beyond looking for some Cities of Gold. I don't want to oversell this Memorial, though. It's mainly just a beautiful visitor's center built back around 1940. There is nothing much else there so unless you have the time or are just a real history buff maybe skip it. (And be aware the Expedition probably did not pass through that area at all.)

And the old copper mining town of Bisbee absolutely should not be missed. Lots to see and do there.

And if by chance you should happen to be out wandering around down in this area with your tow vehicle and need somewhere to stay for the night you might take a look at The Shady Dell "motel" which has a lot of vintage (1940s and 1950s) trailers and old buses in which to spend the night. Now where else would RVers our ranging around stay?

And of course there is Tombstone down in that area, too. OK. It resembles a tourist trap in a lot of ways but given it's history and the old buildings we never miss it. Sometimes we just have to admit our sophistication level is maybe not what it should be.

Hope these ideas give you something to think about. We love Tucson. It's one of our favorite "get out of town" places.
  • San Xavier Mission
    Tubac Mission State Park
both of these are south, off I 19
    Air Force Museum
    Old Tucson (movie set)
    Further afield:
    Tombstone, AZ
    Kartchner Caverns
  • My Daughter & family live in Tucson, which has proven to be a neat city, easy to get around in, with many things to see and do around it. Never camped there, however. But visit often. Maybe something in this will help out:
:) Clicky an old post some links may not be working anymore.

One we always try to eat at is The Hot Wok, Asian Bistro found at:
    Suite 101
7755 East Golf Links Road, Tucson.

My daughter & family just tried a Polish Restaurant & really enjoyed the food. Not sure of the name, it might be this one Polish Cottage at 4520 E Broadway Blvd. They enjoyed the pierogi as did our 4 yr old grandson. Edit addition: Yes, it was Polish Cottage on Broadway.

For breakfast eating, The Good Egg is a neat place with several locations. On 5350 East Broadway Boulevard, 4775 East Grant Road, and 7189 East Speedway Boulevard. It is a chain, but can't tell by the food's taste. Good service. But only open in the mornings.

We also like Panera Bread as well. We eaten at the one on Broadway Blvd.

My daughter really likes Freddy's, a kind of retro hamburger shop featuring Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. Kind of neat. Very clean place. We have eaten at the one on Broadway.

    Bon Appetit!

    Edit addition:
Reid Park Zoo is a great little zoo, the park is also very nice. Neat little "Train Ride" on rubber wheels by zoo into the park. Yummy hot dogs in the zoo out by the animals & really good food in the snack bar area near entrance.

The Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse was pretty good. Kind of neat Old West Town with a few rides & shops. Neat Old West Train on tracks around the site, nice enough Old Carrousel. Located in Trail Dust Town, 6541 E Tanque Verde Rd.

The Tucson Botanical Gardens & Butterfly Magic is worth a visit as well.

We enjoyed going to one of the 2nd Saturdays Downtown. Very enjoyable, good food.

We enjoyed hiking at Sabino Canyon, as well as visiting the AZ Sonora Desert Museum & both units of the Saguaro National Park.

Never been to the Pima Air Museum, neat just driving by it as well as going by the "Bone Yard" at Davis-Monthan AFB, which also has a nice static air craft display just inside the front gate. Our Little Man loves walking around the air craft displayed there.

La Encantada is an upscale, outdoor shopping center located at 2905 E Skyline Dr #279. Kind of neat place to do a stroll. The Apple Store is located there. AJ's Fine Foods is neat seeing all kinds of foods & offerings one normally do not fine in Super Markets.

Directory of Shops at La Encantada.

Magpie's Gourmet Pizza - Broadway and Houghton at 105 S. Houghton #149 (520-751-9949) are really excellent. There are also one at 605 N 4th Ave & one at 4654 E Speedway Blvd. Magpie's

Have eaten here only once, I tried their Gizzards & Livers with Fries & Garlic Bread, Lucky Wishbone at 990 S. Harrison Rd. I found their Fries exceptional. I enjoyed the Gizzards & Livers & the Garlic Bread was good. More butter on the Texas toast than I am allowed now days. Lot of fried & deep fried food, but good eating, just not good for one's health. May never get to eat there again. Ha! There are 7 locations in Tucson all together....Only found in Tucson, a local business since July 1953. Kind of a unique place.

Other places to eat (also found in the First Clicky above) More Places We Have Eaten in Tucson and a few in Bisbee & one in the foothills of the Dragoon Mountains we have not been to.
