Utah base camp?

Im in the routing process now. I think we will leave Cali right after Easter.
I'm hoping Easter/ski vacations are over and most kids are in school.
My 'base camps' will be something like: Panguitch or Ruby's, Moab, Monument Valley, Page or places close to that.
Arriving in Utah on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Can I get by without RV park reservations ?

This goes for most of the West, but sometimes you just need to see it to Know you will come Back.

I'm planning on about 4-5 base camps to circle the state.

I'm just going to address the Moab area, if you don't mind RV parks I would suggest Arch View. This park is located on SR191 at SR131, placing it about three miles from Arches NPentrance.
. Since you have a 4x4 you can get a free backcountry day use permit from Canyonlands for the White Rim Trail, this will give your wife some great photo shots.






Dead Horse Point State Park is also on the way to Canyonlands NP.

Blm has many campgrounds in the local area if Rv parks aren't your thing. there is a very good market called City Market that has good prices and the cheaper cost fuel station are down that way.

To OP: as many have noted, several base camps are required. Of course in the Moab area, you can visit several different places. But to visit a place like Capitol Reef, you need a campsite near there. There are a few who camp between Zion and Bryce and spend an hour each way every day, but why not camp in or near those parks and spend that time sightseeing? If you're at the cg's in Zion or Bryce, it's a short walk to the shuttle. In Zion, the only way to get up the canyon is via shuttle, so you can park and not move for the whole time you're in the park if you want.

It's neat to wake up and easily explore new surroundings.

In 10 days I would think 5 Base Camps might work, but then you would only see a small section of the state -- Utah is just TOO large to do from a single Base Camp, or for that matter just a few, just lay out your sites in any map program and you will quickly see that the entire trip would be spent driving to and from the locations you pick.

Many of us have gotten where we can Check in -- Set up -- Hook up -- and then Get out to the sights in record time. (we can usually do it all in less than 60 Minutes -- that is less than 30 to hook up and less than 30 to unhook and get out. While I hook up the DW fixes the Adult Beverage and we catch the Sunset.

X2 on his book,very good details and directions. Have been using them for years. Their are a few different ones covering different areas, all great. You can just sit and read and enjoy,but caution, if you do that you'll be loading up and leaving on a road trip.
