Thanks to all for the great information.
Background info I should have given earlier. We are in our mid- seventies in good health but clearly not what we used to be. RV is a 26 ft Born Free with generator and 23 gallon propane tank so think we can handle cold as long as it is not below freezing for too long. Used to driving in snow but not with the RV.
We prefer the freedom of no reservations but from the advice here that may not be possible.
Any thoughts on the route? Original post had starting at Salt Lake and ending at Moab. Any pluses for going the other direction thinking that Moab and Monument Valley tours would be places reservations would be needed.
Again, thanks for all the help. It makes planning so much easier.
So you are still young at heart but just a "Little" smarter.
Reservations are something you just need to be smart about (IMHO), weekends and on an event time you might need them , but in your unit you will be able to spend a night or two off the grid, if needed, so just use YOUR head, school and weekends, are the biggest factors, if kids are in, then space is usually available somewhere.
This Map will head south first - might still have some weather concerns - with Canyon de Chelly as the first destination. This gets you south early and then heading north - makes for a long first week, but you need to get to the south, as the mountains are still in Winter. Along this route I can recall many great local and state reservoirs and neat parks, so it can still be fun, you will just need to keep the day's drives enjoyable and enjoy the Sunsets and possibly an adult beverage in the evenings as you head to the Southwest.
Hope this is the sort of advise that you were looking for, as this will be a GREAT TRIP!
Let us know what you decide and then report back with a few pictures.
