We live in Santa Cruz, CA.. family of 5 (boys ages 7,14,16).
All Boys Helps - Had two myself now have all Granddaughters - 7-17 - so have some understanding of the challenges - Activities are Critical - Water - Streams - Fishing - Hikes - Ghost Towns - Learning Photography - In Post COVID-19 might need to try to avoid the Bigger crowds that are from more varied locations - this is code for IMHO Zion will not be a good choice in the Middle of the Summer - too many International Travelers = some elevated COVID-19 Risk. So again IMHO the search needs to be into more isolated Options, and with the Heat of Utah, I'd switch the Focus to Elevations most likely found in the Rockies of Colorado.
Have/had an Alaska trip booked for July, likely to not happen (included a cruise, rental
Rv).... so... thinking if it’s safe to go away this summer I’d rather travel in our TT.
Good choice!
We’d love to see Zion NP and the NP’s in the Utah area.
Think I've already addressed my Opinion on this - Heat and Crowds - Don't get me Wrong, I Love Utah, just think of it as an early Winter late fall trip, it's close enough, to do it on a Spring Break weeks over a couple of Years if needed. JMHO
What would be a realistic loop route from where we are, to say, Moab, or that general area? (The husband/boys like mountain biking).. even as far as Colorado?
Here is a Potential Map - MAP of possible routing ..... - May need you to pick and choose possible locations to stop and camp - most of these locations would allow very private areas if desired. :)
So much to see out that way, trying to narrow down to see the highlights and drive a loop if poss.
Truer Words have never been Spoken - tried to focus on areas that allow dispersed Camping - Biking - Hiking and Water
We have been along the route through Las Vegas, Grand Canyon before (when relocating from NC), so prefer a diff route.
As I've likely done every route more than Once I can Honestly say - it's different every time and in every direction, sometimes it even helps to feel like you've been here before. :)
Also, are some of the NP’s less hot in the summer, maybe at elevation?
Pretty Much in Utah - Bryce is one of the Few that stays Cooler (Not that Much) and the North Rim of the GC. (Not in Utah)
Likely this would be sometime between June-mid Aug.
Dead of the Summer - while all are possible it is not Optimal for fun - Lake Powell could be a great trade in - vs - the Boat trip to Alaska - It is a pretty Amazing Lake and the Boats rent all summer long - Maybe just a week might work - at least to look at.
We’d could go for about 2-3wks.
Three Weeks will be the better of the choices if the option is possible.
Can drive some longer 8hr days but then prefer shorter days.
A couple longer days will be required to get out and Back - Part of the reason for the three weeks.
Hope this is of some Help - 4runnerguy is an expert on Utah and Colorado - I would suggest you reach out to him if any of this looks possible, as he Knows those Great spots few ever see. Possibly send him a PM. (Pretty sure he will Help, as he Really Knows these parts)
Best of Luck.
Someone who did much of this before
Stan's Organization and Images often help
This is Why I so often suggest Colorado - if this doesn't get you - not sure anything Will!
