VA State Parks dog fee

I received an email last night from Nancy Heltman with the VA state park system and part of the note said, "I know that many of our campers will be happy to hear that effective Jan. 1 we will no longer be charging a fee for dogs in our campgrounds. We are designing a new brochure to remind dog owners of their responsibilities that will be ready for the start of camping season in March 2014."

Looks like VA has finally seen the light. However, further on in the email she noted that W/E sites in state parks will increase $3 per night. At least the increase is less than the dog fee.

After complaining (and listening to others complain) for years about the dog fee I am happy to see it discontinued.

  • I travel with one but the dog fee wouldn't have annoyed me if it had been used for something like ranger OT to enforce the dog rules. However, like most state parks, the rules are routinely ignored and rarely enforced so good riddance.
  • Good, I was wondering what was going on with that. I checked their site yesterday and it still listed dog fees and the old rates. Thanks for posting.
