We're from Whatcom County ourselves. I recommend Silver Lake County Park, in Maple Falls. It's where we stay when we want to explore and hike around Mt. Baker. You will need reservations in July. http://www.whatcomcounty.us/1937/Silver-Lake-Park.
I do not recommend the forest service campgrounds for anything bigger than a truck camper. Welcome and safe travels!
