I would recommend Lake Powhatan NP which is just south of Asheville a couple of miles off I26. It is adjacent to the NC arboretum, close to the Western NC farmers Market, and downtown Asheville. Would recommend this camp ground, and also the many things to do around Asheville. If you are there on a Friday evening, you get a great meal downtown next the square and enjoy the drum circle there that starts around 5pm. Another great site to visit is the Grove Park Inn, most all of the Presidents have stayed there, and it is a great place for lunch and walking around the Inn. Built more house is there also.
If you are around Johnson City Tenn or Damascus, Va, make sure to try the Virginia Creeper trail. Google it on the web, and Grindstone NP close to Damascus.
Both of these camp grounds can be found on the Recreation.gov site.
