Western North Carolina to New York(Long Island)

My husband and I make this trip every summer to visit family. We are close to Boone, NC so we usually go north through TN and then VA….and we stay on I-81 most of the way.

We are looking for a different route that will take us through some new places. We are open to suggestions. We can travel any road, go out to the coast, or stay inland. We like the water so maybe Smith Mountain Lake, Lake Kerr, or VA beach, or ???

Are there any places and/or campgrounds that you would recommend?
  • At least an overnight or two at Assateague, MD! If you are self-sufficient, the National Park usually has more availability, but it's all "dry" camping, with no elec. The Maryland State Park has some sites with electric, but no water or sewage. Even with no services, they are beautiful beach parks, with wild ponies wandering through your campsite on a fairly regular basis....

    This year have you thought about a loop with your first waypoint Virginia Beach, across the Bridge Tunnel to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland across the Cape May Ferry then on up to the Island. would add a 100 miles but it would certainly change the Views out the Front Window.

    Options for stops along the way;
    Williamsburg
    Virginia Beach
    Assateague and Chincoteague
    Ocean City, MD
    Rehoboth Beach, DE
    Cape May, NJ
    Atlantic City/Jersey Shore
    Long Island

    If I took the trip it might take a month to get there.

    Just one of many options, Good Luck,

    Ponies

    Sun Rise in Rehoboth;

    Just a couple of pictures to get you thinking.
