Also it is a huge mistake to think of the RGV as only Mission. Mission is just a single area in a long narrow band of urban life that makes up the RGV. It is also at the far western side of the RGV which many view as more Barrio like then the rest of the RGV.
If you want to stay rural (yet still be in the RGV to experience it and draw your own opinions) then take a look at Los Fresnos. No need to book long term either, you could use it as a base to then find your personal comfort zone in the valley.
