There is only one stop on he Metro for the Mall (National Mall/Smithsonian) on the Orange line. It pops you up in the middle of the Mall. From there, you get to all of the things you listed that want to see by foot. All of the other stops in the area are "off" the Mall. Hiking might be a little much for the 5 year old. But you can play it by ear. Do the east end one day and the west end on the next day

X2 - We are local, above is very good advice. Prioritize what you want to see most, look at the maps to see where they are. It may work well to use the Trolley one day for the experience, get to specific places farther off the Metrorail coverage area and use Metro for the rest of the trip.
