2-3 days is quite compress to see much more than the mall. But then your kids are on the young side to appreciate DC. We waited until they were 9/13/14 to go, and our 9 year old didn't enjoy the 5 days we spent there, but then he's more an outdoors kids.
We used the metro exclusively for the visit, which works out really well, though it was hard to get a feel for where you were when you pop out on the mall.
The national hanger, the air & space portion with all the planes might be a better choice for your kids. Not that air & space on the mall isn't great, just fewer planes.
My kids found the national archives to be a bore, but we combined it with a visit to the Spy museum which helped.
I assume you'll be there in the summer. Very hot and humid. Also the Washington Monument is not a walkup activity, make reservations now, if you have your dates.
