We were just there last June, we choose to buy a two day pass to the Grey Line double decker bus. Discounted bus tickets are available in the camp office. Cherry Hill offers a shuttle service to the train/bus depot every morning around 7:30 this is the FASTEST way to DC (35 min or so). Pack a picnic breakfast and jump the shuttle. At the station, there are all sorts of coffee stands and such... grab a coffee and go out to the plaza and sit by the fountain and have breakfast (we brought yogurt, fruit cereal bars and such)wait about 25 minutes and the tour bus routes start... Buses depart right in front of the station. The Grey Line is hop on and hop off (A/C in the lower section) the guides narrate as the bus makes its way... if you buy the inclusive ticket it will also take you to Arlington. When you get tired of walking... ride the bus for a bit and see the sights and relax. In the two days you can cruise by almost all of the sites to see and visit a handful that you are interested in. Be advised- some sites now have airport style security checkpoints and it takes quiet a while to get in... some sites require advanced ticket sales (Bureau of Engraving)... On the return, the bus to Cherry Hill leaves at 5:30PM right where it dropped off and goes back to Cherry Hill. There is no charge for this shuttle.
Discounted metro tickets are available at the camp office. The metro is good but limited when you are walking with kids. The metro station closest to Cherry Hill is a 10 minute drive... have to pay for parking (unless you go on Sunday - no charge parking)... between waiting for connections and waiting for the train from the first station, it can take a full hour to reach DC... Cherry Hill is on the farthest reaches of the line. Also, for a family of 4 or 5, the metro isn't all that inexpensive.
The zoo is a cool place to visit, but plan on a 1.5 mile uphill walk from the nearest metro station. ...
This said, we did a 3 day visit right as school let out and did a fast pass of all the sites... saw the ones that DD7 and DD8 were interested in... and made a list of the must sees for our next visit.
Couple of great grocery stores within two miles of Cherry Hill and a mountain of restaurants and takeout... College Park is a college town...
PM me with specific questions of for further details....
