For a 2 day stay, pick 4-5 sites, 2 (or 3) for each day. There's absolutely no way you will see everything in 2 days.
We did Smithsonian Air and Space and Smithsonian Natural History one day, and the Capital, the White House (which has to be arranged in advance through your congressman but is well worth it), and Archives on the second day.
We stayed at Greenbelt NP and took the subway - far better than having to deal with traffic/parking, and at the time the kids were 11, 8, and 6.
