At the national forests where I camp, you can reserve online up to 2 days before your arrival date. If you want a spot within 2 days of arrival, you have to call or do a walk-in. This means that if a site is reserved for Saturday and I arrive on Thursday for one or two nights, I can use that site (because it can't now be reserved online for Thursday or Friday night).
If I want it for more than 2 nights, I can't use that site because someone could reserve it online out from under me on my 3rd night or later.
